Windows 7 Knockout Windows Vista in usage

Windows 7 was release in October 2009, and according to the research firm Net Applications, Windows 7 is passed over windows vista over usage. From the results of July 2010, Windows 7 knocked out the Windows Vista over usage share. But till now Windows XP is the most used and liked operating system.

In July, Windows 7 surpassed Windows Vista in global usage share. However, Windows XP is still the leading operating system by far, with double the share of Vista and 7 combined.

Note those findings are the result of an analysis of 40,000 sites that are part of Net Applications’ network and as such should be interpreted and taken with a pinch of salt. About 14.46 percent of online users who accessed sites in Net Applications’ network in July had Windows 7 installed versus 14.34 percent of Windows Vista users. Windows 7 and Vista combined are still no match for Windows XP which recorded a 61.87 percent usage share in July, despite losing 0.5 percentage points each month.

Jailbreak iOS 4.1 Beta 2 with Redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5

Apple has already started working on next major iOS update i.e iOS 4.1. About two weeks back the first iOS 4.1 Beta was made available to iPhone developers and today we have second beta of iOS 4.1. Those users who have updated to iOS 4.1 Beta can jailbreak iPhone 3GS 4.1 & iPod Touch 2G 4.1 with Redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5.

However if you have accidentally updated to iOS 4.1 Beta 2 and lost your jailbreak then here is still your hope, A recent tweet from Musclenerd member of iPhone dev team suggest that Redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5 can jailbreak iPhone3G or iPod Touch 2G (non-MC) 4.1 Beta 2 but it cannot hacktivate your iPhone.

You may experience network issue after jailbreaking iOS 4.1 Beta 2 with Redsn0w and you may need to rely on afc2 access (such as FunBox-like file browser programs) to manipulate your filesystem and this is strictly for power users.

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) Beta Available For Downloads

Today at the Worldwide Partner Conference 2010, Microsoft announced the availability of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Beta to the public. The new SP1 includes previous updates that have been issues through Windows Update as well as other incremental updates for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 platform.

The new Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 is only available to users wh are using a RTM version of either OS. The SP1 is not available for users who have the Home edition of Windows 7 or Server 2008.

There is not much information available about what is included in the SP1 for Windows 7 except that there are some Minor updates included in them. Users can download the new Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 by visiting this TechNet link.

iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 4 Jailbroken on iPhone 3GS

Redsn0w 0.9.5 is the tool from iPhone Dev team to jailbreak iPhone 3G 4.0 Beta firmware but if you have iPhone 3GS then you are out of luck, as Redsn0w 0.9.5 only supports iPhone 3G as of now. The jailbreak for OS 4.0 is released with only intention of motivating developers to get their applications ready for 4.0 which is expected to be announced at WWDC 2010.

Until Apple announces iPhone OS 4.0, don’t expect jailbreak tools for iPhone 3GS 4.0 but that doesn’t mean you can’t jailbreak now. One of enthusiastic iPhone hacker, Kaatje has successfully jailbreaked iPhone 3GS 4.0, however the process is not as easy as you may think.

The most interesting part of Kaatje’s jailbreak process is, retaining baseband of iPhone 3GS even after restoring to OS 4.0. Yes as you may guessed now, she managed to achieve this by creating custom OS 4.0 ipsw file and restoring on her test iPhone 3GS with the help of P0sixjinja. Since the baseband is still 05.11.07 the phone is not locked, it can be downgraded back to 3.1.3.

“I accomplished this by patching asr, lockdownd, LLB, iBEC, IBSS, iBoot, kernelcache, MobileSafari, Services.plist, and fstab. The binaries were patched with IDA Pro and OxED and were then diffed against the original pwned files with bsdiff to create patch files. I then took the diff files and built a firmware bundle that I dropped into Pwnagetool and updated the cydia tree within Pwnagetool as well. Once this was done, I created a custom ipsw with Pwnagetool, unzipped it, applied a pwned LLB from a pwnagetool generated 3.1.3 ipsw, zipped it back up and restored to my device.”

Since OS 4.0 is proprietary code of Apple, you won’t find custom iPhone OS 4.0 ipws anywhere. We suggest you to wait patiently till WWDC 2010.

The New Blackberry OS 6.0

Most of the time you guys heard about iPhone new OS, Windows mobile OS, Symbian OS, Android and coming up with different new features. Now Blackberry is going to release its new OS 6.0 which have The entire OS is finally touch-aware and supports multi-touch with pinch-to-zoom and other gestures throughout, including the browser and photo viewer. It now has momentum-based scrolling and a tap-to-hold context menu instead of having to revert to the hardware BlackBerry button.

The home screen now draws slight cues from iPhone, according to BGR. While the familiar buttons have carried over from phones like the Storm2, users can now switch between multiple pages of app icons, such as their favorites.

RIM’s music and photo apps are also more like Apple’s; the audio player has a Cover Flow-like navigator, while the photo viewer provides a rapid-loading set of thumbnails and a tap-to-hide control layer.

The web browser is potentially the largest change and now uses the WebKit engine shown earlier this year, which makes it much more accurate and faster. Tabbed browsing has been added and behaves somewhat similarly to Opera Mini by providing visual thumbnails without hiding the existing page.

Overall, the OS is poised to have a cleaner and more visual interface that has a “web 2.0″ look, particularly in areas like the BlackBerry’s e-mail client.

How To Jailbreak iPhone OS 4.0 Beta With Redsn0w 0.9.5

Whenever Apple releases a new version of iPhone OS, the iPhone Dev-team start working on its jailbreaking. iPhone OS 4.0 just got jailbreaked with a test version of redsnow 0.9.5 (NOTE: this is for only Mac users). The Dev Team has made the redsn0w 0.9.5 BETA download available now, but they do caution you:

Please note that this beta is not meant for the average end-user. There are many things “broken” with jailbroken apps in the 4.0beta1 environment right now [...] This beta redsn0w allows the developers behind those jailbroken apps (like MobileTerminal.app!) to fix their software before the general public gets iphoneOS 4.0.

Because it’s meant for JB app developers, this beta redsn0w does not perform hactivation. You’ll need a properly-registered developer UDID with Apple to get past the activation screen. For similar reasons, there is no Windows version of this beta redsn0w (since apps are developed on MacOSX). Please don’t pirate Apple software.

Below is the step by step guide to jailbreak iPhone 3G 4.0 with Redsn0w 0.9.5 only on Mac OS X.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G 4.0 with Redsn0w 0.9.5

If you are iPhone developer then you can head over to Apple site and download iPhone OS 4.0 firmware or here is leaked version of iPhone OS 4.0 firmware (iPhone1,2_4.0_8A230m_Restore.ipsw) for iPhone 3G.
Download and install iPhone OS 4.0 on your iPhone 3G
Download Redsn0w 0.9.5 for Mac OS X.
Launch the Redsn0w 0.9.5
Select your stock iPhone1,2_4.0_8A230m_Restore.ipsw file (you’ve already used this to update your iPhone3G to 4.0beta1)
Select “Install Cydia” and click “Next”. Use DFU mode to install the jailbreak.
When your iPhone3G comes back up, you’ll notice Cydia has a blank white icon. You’ll also notice Cydia has no sources. Go to the Sources panel and add this repo: http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7 (be sure you have a carrier or wifi signal first!).
When Cydia restarts, you should see its real logo now, and the standard sources should be ready to use.

HTC Desire: Another hit from HTC

The new HTC Desire Smartphone was presented during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. HTC Mobile is a Taiwanese cell phone manufacturer that has been making a lot of noise with the introduction of interesting new Smartphones in the last few years, and HTC is always good for its remarkable technical specifications such as the case of the HTC Desire. The new, slim-line designed HTC Desire is equipped with a fast 1Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and a large, 3.7-inch format display. The display is not only remarkable in terms of format; the screen is a multi-touch AMOLED-type screen, so that the colour saturation and contrast are immediately noticeable.

The HTC Desire mobile phone uses AMOLED and this is certainly a specification that will be valued by the end-user. The display is quite a bit higher in terms of quality than that of the previous ‘standard’ displays. In terms of operating system, the HTC Desire runs on Google Android OS version 2.1 and is therefore an up-to-date smartphone. Of course the Desire smartphone also uses the HTC Sense technology.

The design of the HTC Desire looks pretty good. It is neatly finished at a high level. It’s not for nothing that HTC places this new model on the scale as a high-end Android smartphone. The AMOLED multi-touch screen has extensive possibilities such as zooming in on certain parts. Additionally, various sensors and meters ensure that the screen display can be automatically rotated to landscape or portrait, among others. The HTC Desire cell phone menu is very accessible and gives immediate access to the different HTC software applications.

HTC Desire is equipped with a 5 megapixel colour camera and has some remarkable functionalities like face detection capability, geo-tagging and widescreen photo capture. It consists of a flash which is a very convenient feature for a mobile device to have. This device is equipped with all the latest sensors and chips that a modern smartphone or as Google likes to call them a Superphone must have. It is equipped with a digital compass, which is better than a magnetic compass which was shipped with the very first android phone the T-Mobile G1, apart from that a proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, geo sensor and also what has become the most important in recent times, and Internal GPS antenna.

In short HTC Desire has proved to be a handset which definitely needs to be in the list off some high-tech devices which will help develop the next generation of advanced communication equipment. The release date for Desire is set for April alongside another anticipated and many times delayed handset by Sony Ericsson the Xperia X10.

Motorola getting back in the game

Motorola Milestone (or Droid as it’s known in USA) has certainly been the best most exciting Android based handset YET (considering the hype around Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 and HTC’s Desire). It is packed with the Android 2.0 out of the box and has access to 2.0.1 straight away with 2.1 on the way.

As for what the device is able to deliver to users a 3.7-inch touchscreen display that boasts a WVGA resolution, as well as with its 5-megapixel photo snapper with dual LED flash, the side sliding full QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi connectivity options, aGPS, USB 2.0 and Bluetooth v2.1 capabilities, 3.5mm headphone jack, the email and messaging options it comes to the market with, not to mention HTML browser and multimedia features it supports.

But this phone is meant to be so much more than that – it’s been particularly heralded over in the US as the best Android phone thus far, being the fastest, most up-to-date and agile device yet from the Motorola and they have a few more in the pipeline.

Motorola’s new handset is a pretty basic affair when you’re looking from the front, with the four touch sensitive buttons the only notion that it’s a phone. They’re a little hieroglyphic-like in design and they work well when illuminated for touch-sensitive use.

To summarise the most basic and noteworthy features of this state of the art phone:

The screen. The screen is bright, pin-sharp, and WIDE: with a resolution of 480 by 854 pixels, it’s bigger than the iPhone. Watching a YouTube clip (the Avatar trailer) via WiFi was spectacular, the Milestone’s widescreen screen makes this particularly impressive.

The speed. The speed of 550 MHz of the Milestone is incredible. Initially I suspected it had somehow cached the entire internet in its Droidy brain somewhere it was so fast. Jumping between apps has no noticeable lag, scrolling through lists or webpages is brisk out of the box. Whether it remains this speedy once it’s loaded up with apps and widgets remains to be seen.

Android 2.0.1. The UK Milestone comes with Android 2.0 pre-installed, making it the first device in the UK to run Eclair. But once it’s up and running 2.0.1 is available which brings several instantly noticeable differences. All the icons have been tweaked: some look better, some don’t, but it’s obvious from the moment you switch the device on that it’s a new more exciting version of Android. The bookmarks section of the web browser now has thumbnail icons, and text message threads now also have little thumbnail pics from your contacts.

Multitouch. Finally, pinch-and-zoom (possibly trademark Apple Empire USA) makes it to Android out-of-the-box. It works brilliantly in the browser and picture viewer and with Google maps 4 out in the open pinch-and-zoom works on Google Maps too.

The camera. With its 5 Megapixel camera, dual LED flash, image stabilization and 4X digital zoom the Milestone’s camera is way way better than most of the camera phones that we see in the market. The Milestone’s camera is a bit laggy between photos out of the box but Android 2.0.1 fixes that.

Sound quality. Voice calls sound much clearer compared with the earlier versions of Google Android phones, and music sounds brighter and deeper. The speaker at the back of the phone is the most loudest that can be found in any phone to date (a personal observation). Also equipped with a 3.5mm jack gives it the advantage of that you can plug in your favourite headsets or just connect it to the car stereo.

USB charging. It’s good to have a phone that I can just plug headsets into directly and still free up the standard micro USB socket for charging. Note though that this is micro USB i.e. it’s smaller than mini USB.

All in all this proves yet again that Android OS is all set to do wonders. Considering the latest growth figures of the market share Android OS more than doubled its market share in last 4 months. While Motorola Milestone (named as Droid in USA) has sold more than 1 million handsets in its first 74 days breaking the standard set by the iPhone.

If you ask any regular PC user, he/she will only know about Mircosoft windows XP, Vista or 7, or probably Mac OS not more than that. If you ask a professional he/she probably know about linux maximum, so let me tell you about some other operating systems, you probably never heard of them.

Slax

Slax is a modern, portable, small and fast Linux operating system with a modular approach and outstanding design. Despite its small size, Slax provides a wide collection of pre-installed software for daily use, including a well organized graphical user interface and useful recovery tools for system administrators.

openSUSE

openSUSE is a free and Linux-based operating system for your PC, Laptop or Server. You can surf the web, manage your e-mails and photos, do office work, play videos or music and have a lot of fun. It includes new versions of GNOME, KDE, OpenOffice.org, Firefox, the Linux kernel, and many more updates and improvements. In 11.2 you’ll find more than 1,000 open source desktop applications. openSUSE also includes a full suite of server software and a rich selection of open source development tools.

ReactOS

ReactOS® is a free, modern operating system based on the design of Windows® XP/2003. Written completely from scratch, it aims to follow the Windows-NT® architecture designed by Microsoft from the hardware level right through to the application level. This is not a Linux based system, and shares none of the unix architecture. In short, ReactOS is designed to be powerful and lightweight. You can think of the term “lightweight” in the good old fashion of Win95, a consistent user interface and small bundle of very common and useful tools. Although lightweight, ReactOS offers a lot in comparison to Windows 95, with an up-to-date experience as well as built from scratch on a rock solid NT core.

MonaOS

MonaOS is a free operating system. It’s new, small, simple, open source and well structured. So, MonaOS may be suitable for education of operating system and program at school.

FreeDOS

FreeDOS is a free DOS-compatible operating system for IBM-PC compatible systems. FreeDOS is made of up many different, separate programs that act as packages to the overall FreeDOS Project. FreeDOS is distributed under the GNU GPL.

MINIX 3

MINIX 3 is a new open-source operating system designed to be highly reliable, flexible, and secure. It is loosely based somewhat on previous versions of MINIX, but is fundamentally different in many key ways. MINIX 1 and 2 were intended as teaching tools; MINIX 3 adds the new goal of being usable as a serious system on resource-limited and embedded computers and for applications requiring high reliability.

Haiku

Haiku is an open source operating system currently in development that specifically targets personal computing. Inspired by the Be Operating System, Haiku aims to become a fast, efficient, simple to use, easy to learn and yet very powerful system for computer users of all levels.

Chrome OS will run other browsers

iPhone OS 3.1.3: Release by Apple

OS 3.1.3 for iPhone and iPod Touch has released by Apple. this new update features some bug fixes and improvements such as Fix for app crashes on launch, Fixes bug for app crashes while using Japanese Kana Keyboard and Improves accuracy of reported battery level on iPhone 3GS.

OS 3.1.3 compatible for all models of iPhone and iPod Touch but DO NOT update it if you have a jailbroken iPhone / iPod Touch.
