Internet Explorer was the most popular web browser for the last 10 years, but all that has now changed. In the Netscape vs. IE war, IE won making it even more dominant during that time. Internet Explorer was bundled with Windows XP. It increased the number of users using Internet Explorer increased proportionally taking its market share to 95%.
Today we have Firefox, Opera, Safari, Chrome and IE 8. Internet Explorer 6 has become an obsolete thing, but it is a surprise still how many people use it despite its inability to stay updated with the websites of today.
There are so many issues with Internet Explorer 6. If you have an account on Facebook and you have used IE 6 recently to access it you might have seen the message below
Using Internet Explorer 6 is like using the latest softwares of today on a computer that is from the 90’s. The web today is not designed around the IE 6. A short list of things IE6 does not support, of which coders probably know them all:
- CSS v2 (Cascading Style Sheets): This is the code that enables almost all design on the web. In other words, designers have to hack up websites just to make them load in IE6.
- PNG Transparency: A great deal of .png images don’t display correctly in IE6. It basically kills using them in design work.
- General Security: Just like not updating your virus software can get you riddled with spyware, not updating your browser can be a gateway to attacks. There are even code snippets that will shut down IE6. I won’t tell you what they are, but you can find them on Wikipedia. It’s unstable.
